After a five-month absence, the Athens staff will open its new Goodwill Industries store and donation center on Columbus Road with a grand opening celebration on Wednesday (Sept. 12).
A ribbon cutting conducted by the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the 8,500 square foot store at 175 Columbus Road, about one-half mile from U.S. 33 and across from the Antique Mall. Customers will be treated to a 50 percent off sale for the entire day.
The approximately 20 employees will return to work in their Athens store following the closing in mid-April of the store on East State Street. Many of the employees worked at Goodwill locations in Logan and McArthur during the construction process.
This is the second store this year built for and leased to Goodwill Industries of South Central Ohio by Brenmar Construction out of Jackson where the first new store opened in January. Included in both locations is a drive-through donation center where donors are assisted by staff with their clothing, housewares and other contributions.
“We are extremely excited to get this new store opened and again serving customers in the Athens area, including students, faculty and staff from Ohio University,” said Marvin Jones, CEO. “The support shown us in the past is very much appreciated and we think customers and donors will be very pleased with what they will experience in the Columbus Road store.”
The store and donation center will be open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. and 12-5 on Sundays.
In addition to the store and donation center, the Athens Activities and Training Center is being built next door and is expected to be operational sometime in November. This center will serve those with developmental disabilities in or near Athens County.
